Professional Hybrid & EV Service in Winter Garden, FL

Hybrid and electric vehicles represent a growing share of the Central Florida automotive market. Toyota Prius, Camry Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid, Lexus hybrids, Honda Insight, Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model 3/Y, and many other hybrid and EV models are common sights on Orlando-area roads. These vehicles have unique service requirements that differ from conventional gasoline vehicles — they use high-voltage battery systems, regenerative braking, electric motor generators, and sophisticated power electronics that require specialized diagnostic equipment and technical knowledge.

Scooter Repair in Winter Garden, FL, provides general electrical diagnostics, 12V auxiliary battery service, regenerative brake maintenance, cooling system service, and routine maintenance for hybrid and electric vehicles. Our technicians understand the unique systems that power these vehicles and follow manufacturer safety protocols for high-voltage vehicle service.

Our shop is located at 12935 W Colonial Dr, Winter Garden, FL 34787. We are open Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Call ahead at (786) 939-7414 with your vehicle year, make, and model so we can confirm service capability and parts availability.

12V Auxiliary Battery Service for Hybrids & EVs

One of the most common and most overlooked issues on hybrid and electric vehicles is a failing 12V auxiliary battery. Unlike a conventional car where the 12V battery primarily starts the engine, in a hybrid or EV the 12V battery powers the computer system that initializes the high-voltage system. If the 12V battery is dead or degraded, the vehicle may not enter "ready" mode — even though the high-voltage traction battery is fully charged.

Symptoms of a failing 12V auxiliary battery include: the vehicle will not start or enter ready mode, the dashboard lights flicker or are dim, the vehicle displays a "shift to park" or system error message, or the vehicle starts slowly. We test the 12V battery's voltage and load capacity, replace it with a compatible AGM or lead-acid battery, and verify that the high-voltage system starts correctly after replacement.

Most hybrid and EV 12V auxiliary batteries last 3 to 5 years. Central Florida's heat accelerates degradation. We recommend having the 12V battery tested annually after 3 years of age to catch degradation before it leaves you stranded.

    Regenerative Brake System Maintenance

Hybrid and electric vehicles use regenerative braking — capturing kinetic energy during deceleration and converting it to electrical energy stored in the battery — in combination with traditional friction brakes. This dual-system approach means that the friction brakes may see less use than on a conventional vehicle, which can lead to specific maintenance issues.

Because regenerative braking handles much of the deceleration at lower speeds, the friction brake pads and rotors may last longer than on a conventional vehicle. However, this reduced use can lead to brake caliper corrosion, seized slide pins, and uneven pad wear. The brake fluid also absorbs moisture over time, which can affect braking performance and cause internal corrosion in the brake system.

Our regenerative brake service includes: brake fluid flush and replacement (following manufacturer-specified intervals), caliper slide pin lubrication, pad and rotor inspection, and regenerative brake system diagnostics. We verify that the regenerative braking system is engaging and disengaging correctly and that the friction brakes are functioning properly when called upon.

High-Voltage Safety:Hybrid and electric vehicle high-voltage systems operate at 200V to 800V and can deliver lethal current. Never attempt to diagnose or service high-voltage components yourself without proper training, insulated tools, and safety equipment. Always follow the manufacturer's high-voltage disable procedure.
